How the Reading Fairy Program Began

Almost three summers ago I was having coffee with my son’s future teacher discussing how I might support and encourage his reading and literacy skills.  We decided that I would come and read each Thursday afternoon to her class. That night I pondered how I might make these visits exciting, motivating, and an unforgettable educational experience. As I "noodled" this around, I was watching one of my favorite movies “You’ve Got Mail”.

The scene with Meg Ryan came on where she is in her bookstore (The Shop Around the Corner), puts on a princess cap and starts a read aloud book for a group of children. Tom Hanks is dragged into the shop to hear the story lady by his young niece and aunt Suddenly, sparks were flying in my brain and the idea of The Reading Fairy began to take shape.  I wasn’t just going to wear a hat, but a whole outfit and create a persona that would capture the attention and imagination of children!

Educationally, I wanted this experience to provide more than just a funny crazy Mommy reading to a class.  The curriculum needed to have substance to warrant weekly chunks of my son’s learning time.  I envisioned my options and then set specific goals for The Reading Fairy program.

  • Instill a love of reading and learning
  • Introduce many different types of books to children
  • Create and present a vocabulary and comprehension lesson for each book
  • Involve as many learning senses as possible during each presentation
  • Create a persona that everyone associates with reading
  • Partner with the teachers and schools to support their curriculum and goals
  • Leave a lasting impression with the children motivating each of them to read more

After one presentation to my son’s class, I was amazed and gratified to learn teachers. throughout the school were requesting me to come to their classrooms on a regular basis Since its humble beginning, the program has grown to include many schools in and around Washington Township, one in Rockaway Township and several private kindergartens and pre-schools.

Read Lots!  Read Well!
