Children of Katrina Project
This past year our beautiful township opened a new elementary school, while the other schools received face lifts. It was a very exciting start to the new school year. Everyone was talking about our schools and I suddenly was struck how very lucky and blessed we all were to be living here in Long Valley.
My thoughts turned to all the children starting back to school in the areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A stark difference!
As is the nature of The Reading Fairy sparks went flying, and suddenly I knew what must be done. And The Children of Katrina Project was born. The Reading Fairy has set out on a mission that during the month of April 2007, she will donate 3 days to area schools devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Along with The Reading Fairy's donated time and magic ending box items, we are currently working on contacting publishers and book sellers in hopes that we may give a book to each child, and also each school library visited. It would be so magical to not only give each child the magic ending box gift but a book to serve as a lasting reminder of The Reading Fairy message.
To date, we have received a donated round-trip airline ticket. We are in contact with several area Katrina schools and have started contacting publishers. There is much more to do including raising money for a rental car, hotel, meals, and supplies - but where there is a will there is a way. If you have any ideas or would like to help, please contact The Reading Fairy she will be so excited and so will the Children of Katrina.
